HOMEOWNER'S CHECKLIST

YOUR HOME IS LOCATED IN A FOREST THAT IS DYNAMIC, ALWAYS CHANGING. LIKE OTHER PARTS OF YOUR HOME, DEFENSIBLE SPACE REQUIRES MAINTENANCE.

Use the following checklist each year before fire
season approaches to determine if additional work or
maintenance is needed.

VEGETATION AND FUELS

  • Trees and shrubs are properly thinned and pruned within the
    defensible zones. Dispose of slash.
  • Mow grass and weeds to a low height.
  • Remove trash and debris from the defensible zones.
  • Stack firewood uphill, away from home.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE

  • Post address signs clearly visible from the street or road.
  • Use noncombustible roofing materials.
  • Sweep roof and clean out gutters.
  • Remove branches overhanging the roof and chimney.
  • Clean out chimneys and check spark-arrester screens.
  • Screen all attic and foundation vents.
  • Enclose decks and foundations.
  • Place shutters, fire curtains or heavy drapes on windows.
  • Evaluate power lines for safety and contact the utility company
    for vegetation removal.

FIRE PREPAREDNESS/PREPARATION

  • Install and test smoke detectors.
  • Have and check fire extinguishers are in working order.
  • Have an outdoor water source available, with a hose that can
reach all parts of the house.
  • Have accessible tool storage for ladders, rakes, hoes, axes,
and shovels for use in case of fire.
  • Make sure your driveway is wide enough for fire and emergency
vehicle access (call the Fire Department for details).
  • Clear vegetation from around hydrants, cisterns, and propane tanks.
  • Post load limits on bridges.
  • Practice family fire drills and evacuation plan, meeting points
and other details such as transportation and care of your pets
and animals, temporary housing with family or friends outside
of your area. Make sure all are known and understood.
