SUBDIVISION FIRE PREVENTION COMMITTEE

CHANCES ARE THAT FIREFIGHTING RESOURCES WILL BE STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT IN THE EVENT OF A WILDFIRE EVENT. THE ACTIVITIES OWNERS PERFORM NOW COULD VERY WELL BE THEIR BEST DEFENSE AND ONLY PROTECTION IN A WILDFIRE.

  • Form a Fire Prevention Committee for your subdivision.
  • Find out and learn who your neighbors are: are they year-round residents
or only part-time (63% of Grand County homes are owned by seasonal or
weekend owners)? How to contact them?
  • Many owners who don't reside here year-round may not/do not know about
or understand the serious threats of fire.
  • Get map of subdivision.
  • Invite the Colorado State Forest Service or qualified consultant out for help
    and guidance for your plan.
  • Develop a wildfire evacuation plan for the subdivision and distribute to
residents, including identifying residents that may need assistance.
  • Install and maintain all street signs for easy identification by emergency vehicles.
  • Encourage all residents to install clearly visible house numbers.
  • Evaluate subdivision roads for evacuation and emergency vehicle access.
  • Clear a three-foot area around hydrants for Fire Protection District access.
  • Install a "FIRE DANGER" sign at the entrance and update the risk ("LOW,"
    "MEDIUM," "HIGH," and "EXTREME."
  • Reduce fuel under utility lines and around the base of poles.
  • Install strategic fuel breaks. Reduce fuel in common areas.
  • Hold a "Defensible Space Maintenance" day annually to find out
what maintenance is required every year.
  • Continue education efforts year-round, BEFORE the crisis of fire season arrives.
